The Smash is a cocktail that can be made in any season and with no restrictions. You must have ice…You should use fruit that is in season. You should have a base spirit…You can water down your smash or add some seltzer. The smash is an incredibly flexible and forgiving drink. It’s made to be used with whatever you have on hand and mashed over ice.

All begins with raspberry jam. This is a winter smash, as traditionally, a smash contains seasonal fruit. Because it is cold outside and there isn’t much fresh fruit, jam is a great solution.

We chose raspberry for flavor, but any jam or preserves would work. Orange is a great pairing with raspberry. We used it as a juice and garnish to brighten up this cocktail.

This drink is great for two reasons:

The preserves give it a thicker consistency.

I’m not a big fan of bourbon (unless it comes in caramel). The more I use it in cocktails like this one, the more it grows on me. It’s less potent than tequila or vodka, but it has a distinctive flavor and is delicious when mixed.

Ingredients

  • Half a cup of ice plus more to serve
  • Choose your preserve or jam (we chose organic raspberry).
  • 2 Tbsp Bourbon
  • 1 Tbsp Triple Sec
  • Orange juice, 2-3 tablespoons
  • Orange segments
  • It’s brightened up with a splash of club soda

Instructions

  • Shake the ice, orange juice, triple sec, and bourbon vigorously, and preserve it in a shaker for 15 seconds.
  • Pour in a serving glass, add a few cubes of ice, and top off with club soda. Enjoy. Garnish the drink with orange slices. Repeat for more drinks.
