Decorating Ideas for a Compact Bedroom
Nothing beats a spacious bedroom to relax and enjoy. Most of us, however, have one or more bedrooms that are smaller. If we don’t have the option to knock down walls and extend our house footprint, then we will have to be content with these spaces.
It’s best to check if you can make a small bedroom feel larger, brighter, and more comfortable before you spend a lot of money on this project.
Declutter
You’ll notice a huge difference when you declutter the bedroom. The more stuff you try to squeeze into a small space, the smaller the room will appear. Try to move knickknacks and other items that are not essential for the bedroom into another room of your house.
You can also sell, recycle, or donate items that you don’t need, use, or are damaged. You can store your clothes and accessories in closets to save space.
Pare Back Furniture
Then, consider ways to reduce the number of furniture pieces in your bedroom. Selecting a few beautiful pieces will make the room look more spacious than having too many. You’ll want to make your bed the main furniture piece in a small bedroom.
If possible, try to get a bed that is as big as you can for your room. For example, a queen-size product. Do not skimp on your mattress. You can choose a high-quality hybrid bed, memory foam, innerspring, latex, or another design, depending on your personal preferences. Make this bed the focal point of your room by dressing it in striking, beautiful bed linen.
Avoid adding a bulky headboard to a small room, even if it is the focal point of the space. It’s better to choose a bed with clean, simple lines. This will not make the room look even smaller. Avoid four-poster or other styles that take up a large amount of visual space.
You may also need to get rid of bedside tables or have only one side table if you are short on space. A large reading chair, a bench, or a trunk near your bed will also be out of place. A second tip for furnishing is to choose multifunctional furniture that can do double duty. You could, for example, invest in a base bed that has built-in storage drawers or convert a desk, dressing table, or benches into a bookcase.
You can also build storage units to give you space without having to use huge wardrobes. Use niches and spaces above doors, under windows, or in awkward corners. To make the room appear bigger, keep these built-ins in the same color as the walls.
Use techniques to create the illusion of more space.
Remember that you can create the illusion of a larger bedroom in a smaller one by using clever decorating techniques. Furniture made from glass or lucite, for example, is ideal for a small room as it reflects light without taking up too much visual space. Mirrors can also reflect natural and artificial lighting, making a room appear brighter and more spacious.
Hang curtains and other drapery higher than normal. Place them close to the ceiling above windows to draw the eye upwards and make the space appear larger. You can create the illusion of more space by using a vertical gallery wall or one with greenery. A wall of vertically striped wallpaper can achieve the same effect.
You can also attach lighting to the wall rather than placing lamps on the ground, which will create visual clutter. Also, paying attention to the scale is helpful. The decor of your cozy bedroom must reflect its proportions rather than overwhelm it.
