Ingredient Bourbon Caramel Sauce
A few months ago, I received an e-mail from Joanna at Cup of Jo inviting me to take part in her ” The Best __ Ever ” series. This series aims to showcase the best recipes for classic dishes such as hummus and chocolate ice cream. I was immediately drawn to the Best Sundae Ever category since ice cream is one of my favorite foods. John can attest that I rarely go more than three days without a craving for ice cream. He always delivers.
Even though my deadline was still weeks away, I started brainstorming and came up with the perfect recipe: one scoop of each chocolate and vanilla from a dairy in the Midwest, sliced bananas, homemade caramel sauce, fresh whipped cream, and salted peanuts. This combination was a perfect balance of sweet and salty, and I found it to be incredibly satisfying—it was, I can tell you.
Making caramel from scratch was the perfect way to add a unique and homemade touch. It’s also simple. It’s easy to make caramel from scratch if you haven’t done it before. This recipe, which is also shared on Cup of Jo, requires only four ingredients and takes 15 minutes to prepare. The result is a delicious, decadent, and sinfully tasty bourbon caramel sauce, perfect for topping sundaes and other desserts. Check out the recipe below, and come back Saturday to see another dessert recipe that uses this deliciously simple recipe. You won’t want it to pass you by.
Ingredients
- Sugar, 1 cup
- 1/4 cup of water
- Half a cup of heavy cream
- 1 Tbsp Bourbon*
- One pinch salt (optional)
Instructions
- Stir the pan, but do not stir it, for 15 minutes until it reaches a deep amber colour. Be careful not to burn it.
- Add cream slowly while stirring after turning off the burner.
- Stir in a pinch of salt, then add bourbon. Place back on the still-warm burner and cook for a further minute.
- Transfer to a heat-safe bottle or dish and allow to cool. Store covered in the fridge and bring up to room temperature, or heat it in a warm bath of water before serving. The jar can be microwaved for 30 seconds each time before use without changing the flavor or texture.
